How Consumption tax works in Japan

Consumption tax 10%, Reduced 8% (food, newspapers)

Calculating Japan Consumption tax

  1. Start from the price excluding tax

Consumption tax is charged on the net price. At 10%, a net JPY 100 becomes JPY 110.00 once Consumption tax of JPY 10.00 is added.

  2. To work backwards, divide — never subtract

Removing Consumption tax from a gross figure means dividing by 1.1000, not subtracting 10%. Subtracting the percentage from the gross amount understates the net price, and the error grows with the rate.

  3. Check which rate actually applies

Japan applies a reduced rate of 8% to specified categories. Consumption tax 10%, Reduced 8% (food, newspapers) Using the standard rate on a reduced-rate supply overstates the tax.

  4. Registration is threshold-based

Businesses with taxable turnover above JPY 10,000,000 a year must register and charge Consumption tax. Below it, registration is usually voluntary — worth doing when your customers can reclaim the tax.

Worked example at 10%

Adding and removing Consumption tax at 10%

ComponentAdding to a net priceRemoving from a gross price
Starting amountJPY 100.00JPY 1,000.00
Consumption tax at 10%(JPY 10.00)(JPY 90.91)
ResultJPY 110.00JPY 909.09

So a net price of JPY 100.00 in Japan costs JPY 110.00 once Consumption tax is added. Working the other way, a gross price of JPY 1,000.00 contains JPY 90.91 of Consumption tax, leaving JPY 909.09 net.

Computed from the same 10% rate the calculator applies, so this table and the calculator cannot disagree.
