How ICMS works in Brazil

ICMS state VAT, typically 17-20%. Brazil is transitioning to CBS/IBS: 2026 is an informational test year (0.9% CBS + 0.1% IBS, no tax effect) with ICMS/ISS phased out by 2033.

Calculating Brazil ICMS

  1. Start from the price excluding tax

ICMS is charged on the net price. At 17%, a net BRL 100 becomes BRL 117.00 once ICMS of BRL 17.00 is added.

  2. To work backwards, divide — never subtract

Removing ICMS from a gross figure means dividing by 1.1700, not subtracting 17%. Subtracting the percentage from the gross amount understates the net price, and the error grows with the rate.

Worked example at 17%

Adding and removing ICMS at 17%

ComponentAdding to a net priceRemoving from a gross price
Starting amountBRL 100.00BRL 1,000.00
ICMS at 17%(BRL 17.00)(BRL 145.30)
ResultBRL 117.00BRL 854.70

So a net price of BRL 100.00 in Brazil costs BRL 117.00 once ICMS is added. Working the other way, a gross price of BRL 1,000.00 contains BRL 145.30 of ICMS, leaving BRL 854.70 net.

Computed from the same 17% rate the calculator applies, so this table and the calculator cannot disagree.
